Collection, 1860-1904, containing two series, the first of which is two letters (photocopies), dated 1897 Oct. 5 and 1904 Dec. 9, written by Booker T. Washington. The former is a transcribed invitation to Governor Joseph F. Johnston of Ala. to attend the formal opening of the new Agricultural Building at Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute; the latter is to H.W. Laird in regard to the Institute's policy toward controversy. The second series, Essays, n.d., contains five essays, one of which is written by Florence Yerby David and is about Booker T. Washington. The second is a published essay by Washington entitled "The Negro and the 'Solid' South." The other three are: "How to Build Up a Good School in the South," "The Rights and Duties of the Negro," and "Progress of the American Negro (1904)."
